Downsizing is like a super trend these days. It’s happening right around the world. Millions of people are selling up and moving into smaller houses or even mobile homes and tiny houses. There are some very good reasons for this, and in this post we’ll take a look at some of the top reasons for downsizing where you live.
#1 – It’s All About the Money, Money, Money
Whether we like it or not, money is the life blood of modern society. There’s not a lot you can do without it, and the more of it you have, the more options there are available to you.
It doesn’t matter whether you’re paying off a mortgage for a home you own or you’re a renter, where you live is likely your biggest expense on a weekly or monthly basis. Up to half your income or more could go towards paying the rent or the mortgage.
That’s one hell of a big chunk out of your cashflow.
It’s for this reason so many people are choosing to simplify their lives and downsize their homes. It’s not the only reason, but it’s the main reason overall.
As a very simple example, let’s say your monthly rent or mortgage is $2000. You go ahead and downsize, and now that figure is only $800 a month.
Suddenly you have an extra $1200 a month to put towards other things, but yet you still have somewhere to live at the same time.
Within a few short months you could save enough money for a dream overseas vacation, or upgrade your car. Whatever you want to do with the extra cash. And this has all come about simply be downsizing and reducing that major expense.
Another important point to consider on the subject of expenses is those utility bills, like water and electricity. When you live in a smaller place, you tend to use less of both (especially power). So not only will your rent or mortgage be reduced, but so will other living expenses as well.
That means even more disposable income in your pocket. And that’s always a good thing.
#2 – You’ll Have More Time On Your Hands
Why would downsizing your home free up your time?
Because there will be less to do to maintain your home on a regular basis.
Think about it. The smaller the home, the less time it will take to clean. There is also the yard to consider. Larger homes often have bigger yards to look after. There are lawns to mow, gardens to tend to and so on.
A smaller house and yard simply means less chores, or less time to get those chores done.
Unfortunately, many people become slaves to their homes. They commit to a high mortgage, then have to work their butts off to pay that mortgage. In between going to work, there is a lot to do to keep that large house clean and well maintained. Often weekends are consumed by domestic duties.
That’s seriously not much of a life if you’re in that situation.
When you downsize you give yourself freedom, and true freedom is having both more time and more money.
Doesn’t that sound appealing?
You’ll be able to get out and do more of what you love, knowing you have the money to pay for it and the time to do it.
Truly being able to live is about having freedom, and downsizing your home can give you that freedom.
#3 – Time and Money Freedom = Way Less Stress
Stress is very likely the number one killer in the world today in one form or another, and not many things can create a continual build up of stress levels like worrying about finances and whether you can cover the bills each month.
Even health issues aside, just feeling stressed day to day isn’t exactly the sensation you want when you are hoping to really enjoy your life.
Feeling carefree is the way to be, and one of the best ways to be able to get into that mindset on a consistent basis is to reduce the stress levels in your daily life.
Downsizing your home can certainly help with that in a big way.
You’ve got a handle on your finances and have more money month to month, and you also have more free time to do stuff you like doing, which will further reduce your stress levels.
Ultimately life is about feeling good most of the time. True, this is a mindset that sometimes has to be worked on, but you can make it easier to achieve by setting life up in such a way that you naturally have less things to worry about and more great things to look forward to.
#4 – Recapture the Magic of Childhood
What does this mean exactly?
I guess it depends on the kind of childhood you had, but generally speaking, when you’re a kid, everything seems possible. The world is made up of magic and anything can happen. You’re not yet burdened with the responsibilities of life and your imagination (and mindset) can run freely.
Often it’s like you don’t have a care in the world, because you actually don’t.
You can recapture this feeling to a degree as an adult by simplifying your life and reorganising your priorities. Downsizing is one major way, and a big leap forward, to achieving this ideal.
Once you can recapture some of that childhood magic, suddenly the world seems like a land of vast opportunities again. You are now seeing it through fresh eyes. You have more money, more time and way less stress. Now you can begin to dream and take action on those dreams, because you are in a position to do so.
You can rekindle that magic and chase after the stuff you really want to do in life, the things that make you feel truly happy and fulfilled.
This post has only touched on a few key areas where your life can improve in a big way if you decide to go the downsizing path and simplify your lifestyle.
Life is all about living and not just existing and surviving to pay bills and do domestic chores.
Consider downsizing as a major stepping stone towards living your dreams.
